it has been exactly 118 years since the last avatar, aang, had defeated the fire lord and restored balance to the world. he was strong and free throughout his life, and at the incredible age of 130, he died. then, a new avatar was born, a waterbender named ayumu. her seriousness proves helpful in learning all the elements, but it hurt her socially. in a world of confusion and imbalance, could ayumu be the one to restore peace, or will a new uprising cause her to fail? below the surface of the norm, a rebellion is forming. the non-benders, jealous of the respect the benders earn, decide to fight to restore their own honor. no one can be trusted, and many are losing faith. ayumu has yet to master all four elements at the age of twenty, even though she works hard. what can she do togther that she can't do alone? help her find out, assist the quest for peace, peace at last.

The Firebeding nomad stepped inside and lookeda round. "Ahh~ Let's go to the shop~!" Of couse she had no make-up, her beauty was pure, but she'd thought she'd buy some of the annoying sticky crap. Without waiting for Shino, she bounded off into a medical shop almost instantly, and gathered everything she needed. Once she exited she looked around and found the clotehs shop and looked at Shino. "You stay here. I have to go grab some clothes for the North Pole. I hope you now, once we're there, my granny will know it's me," she said in a low whisper and made her way into the shop. She found a warm coat and bought it, not exactly knowing why they'd even have one.
But it obvious it wasn't the first time she was going to the North Pole on her own. She finished her shopping and came back to Shino, staring up at the sky. "We'd better go find Lixue," she grabbed his hand and pulled him along, "She'll be leaving with her shipments soon."
"My leetle Kaida~" Lixue Zhi sang, smiling. "Who's this-"
"My husband, can we go to your ship? We need to go tot he North Pole to see my granny. Honeymoon or whatever."
The redhead's green eyes examined Shino with suspepcting eyes but smiled brightly. "Fine, fine ya big idiots. Get on the ship before I change my mind!"

He found himself staring. Shino, an Airbending assassin with ice in his veins, found himself oggling this pirate! He forced a smile (not too difficult, all things considered) and wrapped an arm around Kaida. He knew this was a mistake the moment he felt the press of her body against his. Weapon, weapon, weapon, weapon, weapon... "Hello! A fine ship you have! Wonderdul shape to it..." She just trnasport, just transport...Whats wrong with me!? Oggling some woman I only just met, fantasizing about a girl that I considered killing... This isnt like me at all! Perhaps there was something in the water of the oasis... He gestured with his hand for them to lead onward. "Ladies, after you."

"Kind of... scary ain't he?" Lixue asked, looking back at Shino. "And I'd never thought ya were one to get married!" Then the pirate howled at Kaida's reddened face. "I would'a never thought that of ya, Dragon Song! Did he make ya cut your hair? ...Pfft. You look sexier with short hair~"
"Will you shut up you horrible person! I can fry you without even thinking about it!" She whined, pushing Lixue away from her. "You're so weird, you creep me out!" As Lixue continued to practically sexually harass Kaida, the two womens entered the ship and Kaida put herself farthest away from the Earth bender. "Freakin' weirdo. Quit trying to touch me inappropriatly."
"All right! I'll let yer husband do that!"
"WILL YOU SHUT UP ABOUT THAT!? He won't DARE touch me the way you've been!"

Shino's faced glowed a brilliant crimson. To cover it, he came up behind Kaida, wrapped an arm round her waist and buried his face in her neck. Or at least, pretended to. Instead, he whispered into her ear, his cool, un-attatched attitude plain in his voice. "When we get to open sea, we tell her everything but my real name. And that I'm an air bender; I want to save that for an emergency. And your right; I wouldnt ever touch you except as a cover up." He looked back at the pirate, whose name he still didnt know. "If you would please keep your hand off my wife, I'd be much abliged, Miss...?"

"Good!" She growled and elbowed him sharply in the side, steaming mad. and broke away from him to lean against the back of the ship, all by her lonesome.
Lixue smiled brightly, but her eyes were surely scornful as she spoke, "Lixue Zhi, now hold on~" She began to do her Earthbending, pushing her ship along, and looking back at Kaida. "Kaiiiiidaaa~ Why so gloomyy~ It's not like you! Didn't drink cactus juice lately?"
"Go to hell, Lixue," Kaida hopped on the back of the ship and sat there, glaring at the sand they left behind, hugging herself.

Shino went to the bow of the ship and stood by himself till the ship was out to sea (at least, in a manner of speaking), then nodded. Time... He walked over to Kaida and looked down at her. "Its time..." He walked over to Lixue and glared at her unsettlingly for a moment. "Lixue!! We need to talk." He took a few steps backward. "Stop bending. Now. We have something you should know. Kaida, you first."

Dirt seeped up through the cracks in the boat when he glared at Lixue, because she felt she was in danger. Bad danger. She looked from the still upset Kaida to Shino. "We're not really married. I don't know why he's following me around, Lixue, but I assure you, he's no danger. I just need to go see my granny, and tell her about my parents."
"Oh I see..." The dirt began to disappear as Lixue began to bend again. "Well tell your friend, not to demand I stop. I will throw him off my ship, and I will run him over with it."

He looked over at Kaida for a moment. That was why she thought they were going to the Water Tribe? He looked back to Lixue and nodded. "I appologize. I had no right to order a captain to stop her own ship, least of all while I was passenger. But there is more. We should go below decks." He went over to Kaida and crouched to sit on his heels in front of her. He looked at her for a moment and sighed. He spoke as gently as possible. "Kaida, I need you to stay above decks until we return. There are things I cant tell you right now. Dont be upset; we'll be at the North soon, and you'll be able to see your grandmother, hmm?" He stood and looked back at Lixue again. "After you, Captain."

"IF you touch me, I'll kill you." She grumbled, stopping again and going into the captain's quirters instead. "Everything else is full of dirt for when I get into the oceean. Now what do you want?" She growled, sitting on her desk.
Kaida grumble but didn't stop herself from trying to listen. It was a reflex when somebody told her to stay and be quiet and ignore their words. Nosey bugger.

He stood by the door after closing it and sighed. "Thank you. I didnt want Kaida to hear what I'm about to say, nor do I want you to tell her." He looked sharply at her. "Dont get me wrong; I dont care about HER feelings any more than I do yours. But I need her coopeeration." He leaned against the door. For some reason, he was able to concentrate better now; he wasnt staring at Lixue and fantasizing. "It has come to my attention that our girl has both firebender AND waterbender blood in her veins. This could mean nothing; she could be just as limited as the rest of us. Or, it could mean something very important; she could be able to bend both fire AND water." He paused a moment to allow his words to sink in. "Thats the reason I'm...escorting her to the Northern Water Tribe. If she gets to see her grandmother, fine. Thats none of my business, and if nothing else it could keep her spirits up. But I intend to get her into the tutelage of a true master bender. Short of the Avatar herself, the Northern tribe has the best water benders in the world. When, and if, she can bend, she becomes a weapon. Nothing more and nothing less. A weapon I intend to use to silence this non-bender rebellion." He pulled away from the door and took a few steps towards her. This was a mistake; as he got closer, his sensitive nostrils picked up her scent and he got a sudden rush, causing him to become light headed. His next words were in a different tone of voice, one that quivered imperceptably with nerves and sudden sexual tension. "You'll be fully compensated for giving us transport, and for supporting us with your earthbending if your interested..." His body shivered, his palms sweated. His neck and belly itched and his nostrils flared. He stared at her with only the faintest silent shadows of longing in his eyes. His hood and the fabric covering his face was suddenlt restrictive, and before he could stop himself he removed it to reveal his face; handsome, in an alien way, exotic. "Well? Do...do you agree?"

"So she's just a tool? Hmph, I may not like people," Lixue pulled up her foot and stretched her leg to hold the man off, "but I do not like using an innocent nomad as a tool. I knew her mother, she was part of my family's crew, and she swore her firstborn would never harm a person. She won't fight unless she has to. Apprently you've just met my little Dragon Song. Get to know her, she WON'T fight for you. And I refuse, my friend. I hope to teach the Avatar her Earthbending and find out where I truly belong in life. But like Kaida, I refuse to do any sort of violence. No matter how much I hate the human race."
She was not one to be won over by some sexy stranger, it happened once before, and she got only heartache in the end. The shimmering red poeder in the vile tied around her neck began to glow an ungodly shade of crimson as she made her way to the door, putting her hand on the heandle about to pull it open.
"We have a long time's journey. It's best you and Kaida get sleep," she grumbled, pulling the door open, so Kaida could hear. "There's beds down below, but its warmer near the huge mounds of dirt. Kaida, you can sleep in my bed, dear. You'll have tiring days ahead, you need all the rest you can get."
If Kaida had heard anything, she surly didn't show it. She jsut shrugged and made her way down and curled up in the biggest bed. Everything down there was surprisingly clean, even a ceiling-high mountain of dirt seemed neat and orderly.
"Thank you, Lixue, I owe you."
"I only want to see you smiling, my little Dragon Song. If this idiot ever hurts you, Ryuuta promises to scratch his face off." Lixue grinned as Kaida stopped pouting and beamed. "Now go to sleep, hmm?" She went back up to flick Shino in the forehead. "If you lay a hand on her, now that I know you're not married, I'll kick.your.sorry.behind." She then went to go stand at the front of the ship and began to bend, some of the dirt from below seeping up to form a barrier between her and the entrance to the quarters below.
The only warning he'd get to leave her alone.

He stood where he was for a few moments as his sanity slowly returned to him. He jerked the covering back up on his face angrily and stormed outside. He glared at Lixue for a moment before snorting angrily to himself. He turned and made for the ship's rigging, muttering furiously. "As if I would ever lay a hand on either of you. I...I just get...seasick. Thats all." He turned and shouted at her. "I'm going to the crow's nest; I need...to be alone." He began to climb...
He wasnt certain how long he sat in meditation in the crow's nest; he could never recall afterwards, but it must have been some time because night had fallen before he pulled himself out of it. It took that long simply to get his thoughts in order. Whats the matter with me? Every time I get near one of them i fall ill. Perhaps they have some sort of strange new disease? I just need to stay as far away from them as possible... Bah, that will never work; I need to oversee Kaida's training, and I'll need to be close for that. Am I actually starting to..."care" about her? I care for no one, save myself; I can't afford to. And aside form that I've only just met her! Both of them! He slammed his head into the wood railing in front of him so hard that the metalk on his headband bit into his forhead deeply enough to draw blood. He snarled furiously to himself before shouting; "WHAT THE HELL IS THE MATTER WITH ME!?!?!?!?" A few moments later, when his rage had subsided, he glanced over to find Kaida's pet staring at him. He stared back for a moment, contemplating shooing it away, but in the end he sighed and reached out his hand for it. It flinched away slightly, but then hopped onto his forearm and chittered inquisitively at him. "Whats the matter with me, little one?" It didnt respond save to c-o-c-k (hah! beat it again!) its head to one side and chirrup again. He sighed brokenly and flung his arm to launch it into the air. He stood and stretched the kink out of his back before leaning onto the railing. I dont mean to hurt people...But I need to do this. I need to silence this stupid rebellion. I thought Kaida would agree, and Lixue, too. But now the pirate is angry at me; she seems to be infatuated with the girl...hmmm...Is that whats wrong with me? Have I become infatuated with those two? He sighed once more. He seemed to be sighing more recently than he remembered ever doing in his life. Infatuation, if thats what it was, was a new feeling for him. He wasnt sure he liked it. He climbed slowly back down the rigging.
When he stepped back onto the deck he ignored whatever looks Lixue might be giving him and went below, to where Kaida was. He felt his way along; it was dark enough that he could barely see. When he figured that he was in...wherever it was she was sleeping, he spoke. "Kaida?" He blinked; his voice was husky and rasping, as if he had been crying. But he abviously hadnt been; must have been a result of breathing in the dry desert air for such a long interval. He cleared his throat and tried again. "Kaida. How...much did you hear?" He nodded; his normal voice was back. "I suppose you heard enopugh to decide you hate me, hmm? Thats fine; everyone hates me. Thats why I make it my policy to neither trust nor care about anyone. Trust results in hurt; so does caring. And I cant afford to be hurt at the moment. Do you know why I kept so much secret from you?" He pasued for a moment to allow her to answer, the pushed ahead. "To protect the both of us. There are people hunting me at the moment. The worst kind of people. Exile wasnt the end of it, just the beginning. These people would very much enjoy a pretty thing like you. The things they would do to you dont bear telling. And when they're finished they'll try and pry the information out of you; thats when they get down to business, and when you begin to truly pray for death. And as for the things I said, if you heard any of them, there were two reasons I kept them from you; one is that I suspected you wouldnt agree. The other is that..." He sighed. "I think because I didnt want to hurt you. It was never my intention to do that. Think of it this way; I'm here to make sure you become as much as you possibly can, as I am hoping to do. Think of me as a sort of...life guard. I wont let you back into the shallows. But if you get too deep, I'll be there to haul you back out of it." He turned as if to leave, but spoke over his shoulder. "I dont care if you hate me; thats your perogitive. But consider this; if anyone else learned what I suspect, what would they do to you that I, no matter what the circumstances, never will? Think about that, hmm?" He left and returned topside. He sat on his knees a respectful distance away from Lixue and sighed deeply. "I explained some things to Kaida. Some reasons. I didnt mention what we talked about, but I suspect she heard some of it at least. It was never my intention to hurt her; till a while ago I didnt. I may still not have, unless she realy did over hear our little chat. And now its time you heard some things as well... There are people hunting for me. Terrible people, who would take either or both of you and make your lives hell. They would break you down as slowly as they could, savoring each and every drop of pain and despair. Then they would start trying to get information out of you; thats when you really start wishing for death. Thats why I didnt tell either of you the whole truth, why I still dont. If they dont thinkyou knopw anything, they might leave you be. Thats why I usually travel alone. Hate me if you like, I cant stop you. But know this; what would they do to her that I never will? In a way, even if I hurt her a little bit, I'm protectiung her in the long run. I wont hesitate to kill these people, and I'm capable of doing it. I'm not certain those things apply to Kaida. Think about those things for a while, hmm?" He stood and went over to the ship's railing. He looked down; in the dark her couldnt tell if they were over sand or water. "If your done being angry about things you dont fully understand, are we over water yet? If not, how long until we are?"

Kaida curled up even tighter under the blankets, hugging herself as if she were freezing, it sure felt like it anyhow. Goosebumps rose on her skin, a chill or three found their way making the small girl shiver violently.
But on another note, she was crying. She didn't hate anybody, her heart was incapapble of it. She was a true nomad, raised on wishes to become a fire bending nomad. Hell, she was breaking a promise not to go see either of her grandparents! She sighed and pulled the blanket over her head and covered her head with the pillow.
If only he had the actual courage to...
"An hour or so more and we'll be on the ocean," Lixue gave no other reply and continued bending. But then she paused, looked at him, then continued. "Nobody is allowed to harm me, I've been protected by law, until I find out who my real parents were. Not even the non-benders would touch me, they say something about a missing princess. I doubt it."
She heaved a sigh and shook her head, "We may have just met, but Kaida is still so much like a big baby. You can't be a jerk to her or she'll cry and cry until there's no water left in her body. I may come on your journey, but not to protect myself. To protect you from Kaida and protect Kaida from you."

He nodded. He suspected as much. But another thought pushed its way into his mind, and he whispered it allowed. "And who is going to protect me from ayou and you from me?..." He looked back to her. "Once we get to the sea i'll keep the sails full..." He looked away uncomfortable. "You should go and see Kaida...I'm not very good at apologies, having never made any before, and I was a bit harsh. I think I may have upset her..."

"I have dirt, everywhere, if you so much as do anything to bother me, I'll kick your a-"She stopped, the ship coming to an abrupt stop. "Tch. Didn't think of that." So she wasted no time in zooming down below deck and sitting ont he bed to comfort the crying girl.

He stared out at the sand for some time after she left. He was joined by Ryuuta. He looked over at the lemur and sighed. "Well, now what?" The creature looked at him for a moment then went to scratching its self. Shino snorted. "Some help you are, worthless hairball." He waved his arm and shooed it away. He leaned over the railing for a moment. Then, an idea hit him. A great idea. Something he could do that just might make up for everything. He slung his backpack (where the hell did that come from?) off his shoulders and rummaged through it. He pulled out a spare shirt, which he wadded up and stuffed into a pocket. Then he pulled out his glider and sailed away...
A few moments later, he found what he was looking for; the shriveled remains of an ironwood tree. He found some straight sections and gather them up. A bit of work and... Done!
He put down on the deck and leaned his creation against the mast. He rushed down the stairs to below deck. He stopped just outside of Kaida's room. He knocked and cleared his throat. "Kaida? I have something for you; I'm sure you'll like it..." He blushed as he realised how that sounded. "You should come above deck. You too, Lixue."
